Pakistan not to call itself `frontline state’ in terror war

Posted: 20 Jan 2011 10:10 PM PST

Pakistanafmap3 Pakistan not to call itself `frontline state in terror war Islamabad has decided to drop the phrase “frontline state in war against terrorism”, frequently used by officials to highlight Pakistan’s role against terror, as it was not serving the country’s interest, an official said.

“Descriptions like frontline state in war against terrorism overcast country’s positivities. Therefore, we are doing away with this phrase,” Dawn quoted a senior security official as saying.

He said the “frontline…” phrase was misleading as it created an impression that the problem of terrorism was specific to this region and it contradicts Pakistan’s position that it is a global phenomenon.

“We don’t want to be seen as the epicentre of terrorism any more.”

Pakistan had acquired the tag soon after 9/11 attacks in US.

Though successive governments have flaunted the sacrifices made during the terror conflicts by portraying it as the frontline state in the anti-terror war, there is an opinion in the government that the label has cost it dearly.

The country has lost almost $50 billion over the past 10 years, and thousands of civilians and security personnel have been killed or seriously injured, according to government estimates.

The media report said that instability, a shrinking economy, currency devaluation, massive internal security expenses and loss of investment and export markets are some of the manifestations of the adverse impacts.

The West, however, has maintained that Pakistan has benefited from its role as the frontline state through international aid and rescheduling of its debt.

The senior official said that the dropping of the phrase does not symbolise dilution of the country’s commitment to counter-terrorism efforts.

He stressed that rising extremism and radicalisation of society was emerging as a bigger threat and the reaction to Governor Salman Taseer’s killing earlier this month has laid bare how precarious the situation was.

“We may handle violence by resorting to force, but extremism is a state of mind that cannot be addressed by such means,” he said.

The official added that that formulations like war on terror oversimplified the problem, but it neither offered correct diagnosis nor the right prescription.

“We are determined to get out of this paradigm of negativities.

“We intend to give a new image to the country by giving more emphasis on economic development and highlighting the country’s inherent strength,” he said.

Another senior official said that the government felt that its strategic priority should be development.

Rajesh Talwar ‘suspected accused’: CBI

Posted: 20 Jan 2011 10:07 PM PST

Central Bureau of Investigatio Rajesh Talwar suspected accused: CBI The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Friday told a court here that it was against handing over documents of teenager Aarushi Talwar’s murder case to her father Rajesh Talwar as he was a “suspected accused” in the case.

In its arguments before a special CBI court here, the investigation agency submitted that Talwar was not a complainant and was instead a “suspected accused” and hence not entitled to get documents pertaining to the case.

To this, Talwar’s lawyer Satish Tamta argued that if Talwar was a suspected accused, then why was no chargesheet filed against him. He then requested the court to order a reinvestigation into the Aarushi’s murder in 2008.

Naresh Yadav, the lawyer for three of Talwar’s domestic helps, meanwhile, submitted that a chargesheet be filed against the accused to ensure that the domestic helps are not implicated again.

Aarushi, 14, was found murdered under mysterious circumstances in her parents’ Jalvayu Vihar apartment in Noida, May 16, 2008. Their domestic help Hemraj’s body was found on the flat’s terrace a day later.

Rajesh Talwar was arrested soon after the murders but let off when investigators could find no evidence against him.

Krishna, Talwar’s medical assistant; Raj Kumar, a domestic help with a family friend of the Talwars; and Vijay Mandal, another domestic help in the neighbourhood, were also arrested during investigations but were let off due to lack of evidence.

abhishek bachchan651 300x205 Abhishek teaches Italians to wear dhoti After the dhoti-clad look in his last period film “Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey”, Bollywood’s star actor Abhishek Bachchan has become quite a pro in tying one and displayed his expertise to Italians on a trip to Florence.

“When Abhishek was in Florence, people requested him to show how to wear a dhoti (the wraparound waist-wear). So he actually showed them,” a source close to the unit said.

“He also went on to say that he loves wearing Indian wear a lot and as and when he gets the opportunity to wear he doesn’t miss it,” the source added.

Abhishek, son of Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan, and who is married to another star and former Miss World, Aishwarya Rai, travelled to Florence to be a part of Florentine label Ferragamo’s ‘Shoes for a Star’ project, becoming the first Indian actor to receive the made-to-order Tramezza shoes from Ferragamo.

Abhishek, his wife and father endorse several leading national and international brands.

I’m choosy because my work, not my face, sells: Irrfan Khan

Posted: 20 Jan 2011 09:57 PM PST

Im choosy because my work, not my face, sells: Irrfan KhanFrom Doordarshan serials to Hollywood films, Irrfan Khan has traversed a long path. The 48-year-old actor says he is very conscious about which project he chooses as it’s his work that sells, not his looks.

“I am choosy because it’s not my face that sells. My work is what people like and want to see again and again; so I can’t repeat myself,” Irrfan told IANS in an interview.

“I have to look at the stories, which are exciting, which give me scope to do what I haven’t done earlier, which have entertainment, which can engage me for a long period of shooting. So it also becomes important to see with whom you are going to work,” he said.

Irrfan also maintains that co-actors matter a lot while signing a film.

“The co-star matters a lot while doing a film. It depends on the film as well. Some films require a certain kind of chemistry, some films don’t require the chemistry. But there are some dramas where the co-actor becomes very, very important. There it is not how you are performing your character or reacting to the other but how you are interacting with your co-star becomes very important. It’s definitely a concern when it comes to a film where the co-star matters. Especially when you have a very sensitive chemistry,” said Irrfan.

The actor can’t be more right – if his performances in movies like “Maqbool”, “The Namesake” and “Life…In A Metro” were anything to go by. He was applauded and his crackling chemistry with co-stars Tabu and Konkona Sen Sharma respectively were seen as the high points of the narratives.

Now the actor is excited about sharing an unusual chemistry with Chitrangada Singh in director Sudhir Mishra’s forthcoming film “Yeh Saali Zindagi” that also stars Arunoday Singh and Aditi Rao Hydari.

“The chemistry I have with Chitrangada…after so many years…you know…after ‘Maqbool’, I got a chance to play that kind of equation, where this guy loves a girl, which is so unusual,” said Irrfan.

“Yeh Saali Zindagi” is a quirky love story in the guise of a thriller.

“The name of the film gives an impression of complaint towards life, but it’s rather an amusing, mesmerising way of looking at life. It’s not a dark film but an engaging and entertaining thriller. What you take back with you is the chemistry of the characters in the film,” said Irrfan.

In his young age, he played a character older to his age in the tele-soap “Banegi Apni Baat” but now he sticks to characters his age. Irrfan says there is a rat race to look younger these days, but the audience would surely mature to accept actors playing their age in movies.

“The audience here is youth audience. It’s not Hollywood where a 50-year-old is playing the lead character. So the effort is to look younger, which sometimes is not at all enjoyable. I hope it changes. I hope people can play their own age,” said Irrfan.

“In ‘Banegi Apni Baat’, even now in ‘In Treatment’, they had to age me. One of my friends met me in the Cairo film festival – she is a Turkish actor – and said ‘why you keep on doing this role, which is older than your age?’ Like in ‘Paan Singh Tomar’, I start being a 20-year-old and get older through the film. So I think how would I look as a 20-year-old guy?” he added.

“For me, there is more effort to make things effective. And things are effective when they are done and not pretended. There is a very thin line between when you are pretending and when you are doing it from within. To blur that thin line, one needs practice and working on yourself…,” said Irrfan.

The actor says the fate of a film is always unpredictable.

“A film is such a mysterious thing that no one can say whether it’s going to work or not. You can say everything is working on paper, it cannot go wrong, but after editing the whole thing might suddenly change and the audience reacts to it in a completely different manner. So, it’s a very strange chemistry between the film and the audience,” said Irrfan.

Aamir is a dream producer: Kiran Rao

Posted: 20 Jan 2011 09:53 PM PST

Aamir is a dream producer: Kiran Rao She didn’t want to work with Aamir Khan in “Dhobi Ghat”, but once he was on board, first-time director Kiran Rao not only enjoyed working with her husband but also got some valuable tips from him. She is however not sure if she will write a script specially for him, although she says he is a “dream producer”.

“Aamir told me, ‘Don’t move on until you’ve got what you want and once you’ve got it, don’t waste time.’ That was his one mantra for me,” Kiran told IANS.

“I would love to work with Aamir again. As of now there is nothing that I have written exclusively for him and to be honest I don’t think I can write something keeping him in mind specially.

“I can work around an idea that I like, but I can’t create something to suit him. So I hope in the future I write something that ultimately suits him,” she said.

Released Friday, Kiran’s film is a beautifully narrated slice-of-life story and all the actors including Aamir fit into their roles and essays them with such elan that it makes “Dhobi Ghat” a wonderful movie.

Talking about working with Aamir, she said: “I had great fun. It’s very easy working with Aamir. He is a real support on the set and is very relaxed. At the same time he is very committed and was there whenever I needed him.”

So did he try to turn her into a perfectionist like himself?

“He doesn’t give up until he is satisfied with what he is doing, but I don’t think perfection is anything. We can only be the best we can. What drives Aamir is basically his passion for what he does. That makes him pull out everything and I have taken that advice from him,” said Kiran, who married Aamir in 2005. The two met during the filming of Aamir’s home production venture “Lagaan”.

Finally, when asked how she would like to define Aamir as a producer, Kiran revealed: “Aamir is a dream producer. He is a kind of producer, if he likes your script, he would let you do whatever you want to.

“He supports you and protects you and budget is also not a big thing. He gives you the freedom to fulfil your vision. I couldn’t have found a better producer. I was really lucky to find him.”
Meanwhile, Aamir Khan, who is known for his diverse roles, says he does only those films that his heart tells him to.

“I just go with my heart and go towards scripts that excite me, touch me and move me and which I feel I will be happy doing. I’ve been lucky that they have been successful,” Aamir told IANS.

For the last five years, all his films have been hits, including “Rang De Basanti”,
“Fanaa”, “Taare Zameen Par”, “Ghajini” and “3 Idiots”.

Will attend IIFA if we’re free: Abhishek Bachchan

Posted: 20 Jan 2011 09:45 PM PST

Abhishek plays Big Bs Will attend IIFA if were free: Abhishek Bachchan Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan has said that if their work schedules permit they would definitely go to attend the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards to be held in Toronto.

“I don’t know when it is but obviously if we are free and not working, yes we’ll go for it. We’ll see if we could accommodate it, but if we are busy making films then obviously we won’t be able to go there,” Abhishek, who graces the cover of latest issue of Stardust magazine along with wife Aishwarya Rai, told reporters here Thursday night.

“Because if we don’t make the films we won’t get nominated the next year so we have to concentrate on our work. If our schedule permits let’s see,” he added. The actor was in the capital to unveil the latest issue of the magazine along with Aishwarya.

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan had been the brand ambassador of IIFA ever since its inception in 2000. However, Big B created a stir when he revealed on microblogging site Twitter that he will not attend the ceremony in Toronto as IIFA said it no longer requires his services.

An official statement from the organizers said that they have aborted the concept of brand ambassador.

“Due to unexplainable reasons, after announcing the event as brand ambassador, Bachchan couldn’t participate in the IIFA weekend at Sri Lanka last year. Following this, IIFA aborted the concept of a brand ambassador,” said Sabbas Joseph, director Wizcraft, which organizes the event.

The statement also said: “The Bachchan family has been an intrinsic part of IIFA every year, and in this regard we have already shared with them a proposal about their participation this year too.”

The awards ceremony will be held in Toronto from June 23-25.

Apex court upholds life for Graham Staines’ killer

Posted: 20 Jan 2011 09:40 PM PST

The Supreme Court Friday upheld the life imprisonment awarded to Dara Singh alias Ravinder Kumar Pal for leading a mob that burnt to death Australian Christian missionary Graham Staines and his two sons in Orissa in January 1999.

While confirming the life term to Dara Singh and his accomplice Mahender Hambram, the apex court bench of Justice P. Sathasivam and Justice B.S. Chauhan said it was not a “rarest of the rare case” warranting death sentence.

Concurring with the Orissa High Court finding, the Supreme Court said that Dara Singh and his accomplice wanted to teach Staines a lesson for his religious activities, including conversions to Christianity.

Staines and his two sons, Philip (10) and Timothy (6), were burnt to death by a mob Jan 22, 1999 while they were sleeping in their station wagon at Manoharpur village in Orissa’s Keonjhar district.
