Tendulkar surprised at Mumbai Indians not picking me: Tamim Posted: 21 Feb 2011 01:57 AM PST
Tamim said that Tendulkar has promised to look into the IPL rules whether his team Mumbai Indians can still sign him up. Here to play the opening match of the World Cup that India won against Bangladesh, Tendulkar regretted that his IPL franchisee did not rope in Tamim during the auction. Tendulkar had instructed MI officials to pitch for Tamim, but when he was put on auction they remained silent. Tamim came to know about this when he met Tendulkar before the Indian team left Dhaka. “He (Tendulkar) told me he was very surprised at their decision,” Tamim was quoted as saying in The New Age Monday. “He was out of India at that time and so could not dictate the terms. Tendulkar promised to see the rules if they could still sign me,” said Tamim. Lutfur Rahman Badal, the cricket chairman of the Mohammedan Sporting Club, said Tendulkar spoke very highly of Tamim. “Mumbai Indians have only $1,25,000 left from their budget in this season. They have to hire some uncapped Indian players with this money. So he was not sure if they still can sign Tamim,” said Badal. Mohammedan Sporting Club has also invited Tendulkar to play for them in the next season and says that the master blaster has agreed to consider the proposal. |
Life in the Metro: A networking site to find love, pals Posted: 21 Feb 2011 01:55 AM PST
The brainchild of 24-year-old management student Sameer Suri, the portal www.metromates.in is fast becoming popular among young Metro commuters. “I was inspired by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. When I decided to create a portal, I wanted it to be unique and the very thought struck me when I was travelling in the Metro,” Suri, a student of the New Delhi Management Institute, told IANS. Suri said the idea of creating an exclusive portal for Metro commuters came to his mind during his usual one-hour travel from Janakpuri to Saket on the Metro, characterised by stiff, poker-faced fellow commuters and a fleeting realisation of the loneliness and isolation of urban life. The portal was launched in January and in less than two months, around 1,200 people have registered and 8,000 people liked the community on Facebook. “It’s not just one among the many networking portals available on the net. It has its own set of users like Metro commuters. While signing up on the portal, we seek specific details like the route taken by a person and the time usually a person boards and alights,” he said. The portal also asks for details such as your sexual orientation, personality traits, height and waist size, and whether you’re signing up for dating or friendship. “Now, getting friends or a partner to date is easier for Metro commuters,” Suri smiled. “After a person signs up, he or she is given a unique bluetooth code. While travelling, you’ll have to turn on your bluetooth device, and set a phone name to metromates.in/yourusername. After you do that, other metromates users will be visible on your (GPRS-enabled) phone,” he said. Besides these, one can also view other profiles, note down their profile names and type ‘metromates.in/(the other persons profile name)’ in the browser to connect with them and exchange bluetooth messages. For easy identification, the portal asks its users to travel in the last compartments. As many as 493 members have already registered on the Jahangir Puri-Huda City Centre route, which mainly carries college students. The Dwarka sector 21-Noida City Centre line has 444 members. As many as 116 members have registered on the Dilshad Garden-Rithala route, 102 members on the Central Secretariat-Badarpur route and 47 on the Inderlok-Mundka route. Most of the users are between 20 and 30 years and a majority prefer dating to making friends. “Metromates has got me new friends. Usually, I really get bored as I travel from Malviya Nagar to Noida City Centre. Now I have got three friends. If more members use the portal, it will be more fun,” said Avinash Sen, a hotel management student, who has been using the service since Feb 12. And what next? Suri said metromates would soon arrange a get- together for all its users. According to the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IMAI), there are nearly 52 million internet users in India. Mobile internet users currently number around 10 million and most of them use it for social networking. And how many of them are looking for love? Statistics are not available on that yet, but as Suri and his fellow travellers will tell you, there are quite a few! |

Oral sex bigger cause of throat cancer than tobacco Posted: 21 Feb 2011 01:41 AM PST
Scientists say the human papilloma virus (HPV) spread during unprotected sex is to blame for a disturbing rise in potentially deadly oral cancers in the last few decades. Doctors have called for boys to be vaccinated against HPV just like teenage girls to stop the spread of the disease. HPV is best known as the cause of around 70 percent of cervical cancers. Since 2008, girls aged 12 and 13 have been vaccinated against the virus in schools. However, it can also cause warts and other cancers, the Daily Mail reports. Cancers of the mouth and oropharynx – the top of the throat – used to be mainly diagnosed in older men who drink or smoke. But increasingly, it is being seen in younger men. Maura Gillison of Ohio State University in Columbus said the sexually transmitted HPV was a bigger cause of some oral cancers than tobacco. She said: “We don’t know from strict scientific evidence whether the vaccine will protect from oral HPV infections that lead to cancer,” according to a Ohio State University statement. “Those of us in the field are optimistic it will – the vaccines in every anatomical site looked at so far have been shown to be extraordinarily effective, about 90 percent effective, at preventing infections.” |
SRK has unique ‘Always…’ promotional strategy: Abbas Posted: 21 Feb 2011 01:29 AM PST
“His involvement is there but he is also shooting for two movies. He has ‘RA.One’ on one side and ‘Don2′ on the other, but in the midst of these, his support is always there and you will get to see some unique Shah Rukh ideas as we go along,” Abbas told IANS in an interview. Shah Rukh is in touch with his office from Malaysia, where he is shooting for “Don2″, said Abbas. “Currently, he is in Malaysia. But he has seen the marketing plan of the film. He is continuously in contact with Red Chiiles because he wants to know what we are doing, what our ideas are to promote the film. He has also given us some ideas,” said Abbas. “Once you see the posters, which would be out soon, you will see how the Red Chillies’ look and feel has come into this film,” he added. Abbas also said he regards Shah Rukh as his mentor. “He has always been around on the sets. He is the busiest person on this planet. Even in the middle of that, he used to find time for my film. That’s what makes him really interesting. He was there as a mentor in that sense, but he has not been a tormentor,” Abbas laughed. Set in a high school, “Always Kabhi Kabhi” captures the emotions of love, jealousy and pride that marks one’s school years. “It’s an adaptation of my play about a high school ‘Graffiti’, which I earlier wanted to turn into a graphic novel,” Abbas said. |

I was desperate to conceive second time: Kidman Posted: 21 Feb 2011 01:24 AM PST
Kidman is married to singer Keith Urban. “Anyone that’s been in the place of wanting another child or wanting a child knows the disappointment, the pain and the loss that you go through trying and struggling with fertility,” people.com quoted her as saying. “Fertility is such a big thing, and it’s not something I’ve ever run away from talking about. We were in a place of desperately wanting another child. This opportunity arose for us, and I couldn’t get pregnant,” she added. |

Kasab trial raised prestige of Indian judiciary: Chidambaram Posted: 21 Feb 2011 01:16 AM PST
“This is a tribute to our legal system. We should allow our legal system to deal with the case in the manner every other case is dealt with. The manner in which we dealt with the case has raised the prestige of the Indian legal system,” said Chidambaram, who had also complimented the prosecution on the judgement. The court Monday upheld the death sentence awarded to Kasab by a lower court for the killings during the 26/11 terrorist strike. Chidambaram, however, expressed frustration at the pace of the prosecution of 26/11 plotters in Pakistan. “Between the high court and trial court in Pakistan, I am afraid there has been no movement at all,” said the minister. |
BJP apprehensive on execution of Kasab’s sentence Posted: 21 Feb 2011 01:14 AM PST
“The court has sentenced Kasab, but the question is whether he will be hanged because the ruling party will again say that he is in the queue. The death sentence has been given, but when it will be executed depends on the government,” party spokeperson Prakash Javadekar told reporters outside parliament. The Bombay High Court Monday upheld the death sentence awarded to Kasab by a lower court for the killings during the 26/11 terrorist strike. The main opposition party said that the execution of Kasab’s sentence may be stalled just like that of parliament attack convict Afzal Guru. “Afzal Guru is still in the queue to be hanged even after the Supreme Court verdict,” he said. Reiterating the party’s demand for hanging Guru, Javadekar demanded Kasab’s sentence be executed soon. “We demand that whether it is Kasab or Afzal Guru, there should not be any queue. Those who have acted against the country should be hanged immediately,” he said. Kasab’s sentence was hailed by Home Minister P. Chidambaram as a “victory of Indian legal system.” “It is the victory of the Indian legal system. It shows that the legal system should be left to take its own course,” Chidambaram told reporters outside parliament. |
