New smartphones give instant access to Facebook

Posted: 16 Feb 2011 01:53 AM PST

HTC Salsa and ChaCha 300x164 New smartphones give instant access to Facebook Mobile phone giant HTC has launched two handsets – called Salsa and ChaCha – that will provide instant access to Facebook.

By punching in the ‘F’ logo, users will be able to instantly share photos, music and even their exact location on an inbuilt map from their mobile phone.

At the moment, owners of iPhones and similar products have to use a touchscreen process to access pages on the popular social networking site.

In a clear attempt to target the teenage market, the Taiwanese phonemaker called the two phones Salsa and ChaCha, the Daily Mail reports.

Salsa is a touchscreen-only phone with a 3.4-inch screen. ChaCha has 2.6-inch touchscreen with a separate keyboard, which looks a lot like a Blackberry.

Parents faced with children badgering them for one of the new gadgets may only have weeks to save up the cash as the phones may be on sale in Britain in April.

HTC and Facebook have spent two years developing the two phones. The devices have Facebook built into their contacts system, allowing users to see Facebook friends and message them.

When taking photos, the user simply has to press the F button and the images will appear on their Facebook profile. Similarly, when using Google maps, owners of the phone can press the F button to give friends their exact location.

Peter Chou, CEO of HTC, said: “We wanted to create the ultimate socially connected phones with mass market appeal.”

PCA gears up to host World Cup matches

Posted: 16 Feb 2011 01:48 AM PST

The Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) is busy refurbishing the infrastructure and basic amenities of its stadium here for the upcoming World Cup matches.

The PCA stadium is considered one of the most ultra-modern facilities in the country.

To ensure comfortable seating arrangements, PCA authorities are working round-the-clock to set up chairs in all blocks of the stadium. The stadium used to have wooden planks that allowed for 30,000 spectators. With the introduction of chairs, the space will shrink, bringing the seating capacity down to 28,000 despite an additional 3,000 chairs added for the World Cup.

“We are committed to provide world-class facilities to foreign players and their team officials. PCA is working very hard to live up to the expectations and we are looking forward to witness exciting World Cup matches here. We would ensure that the stadium is jam packed during all the three matches,” PCA secretary M.P. Pandove told IANS.

“We are installing chairs in all blocks so that spectators can sit comfortably and enjoy the game. An International Cricket Council (ICC) agency will tie-up with the nearby selected schools and bring their students to the stadium. PCA would provide this agency around 5,000 tickets that would be distributed free of cost among students.”

The PCA stadium was built in 1992 and is located at a distance of around 10 kilometers from the state capital Chandigarh.

The first One-day international match was played here between India and South Africa during the Hero Cup, Nov 22, 1993 while the first Test match was held Dec 10, 1994, between India and West Indies. One of the thrilling match on this ground was 1996 World cup semi-finals between Australia and the West Indies.

“Sale of tickets will start Feb 21 for different categories of AC lounge, pavilion terrace, north pavilion, VIP block, chair block and student block. We would also sell tickets through online so that people residing at far off places can also buy tickets,” Pandove said.

The second semifinal scheduled March 30 will be the first World Cup match here to be held under floodlights. The other two matches here are South Africa and Netherlands March 3 and between West Indies and Ireland, March 11.

“All 514 tube-lights fitted in the flood-light poles have been replaced and they would run with the help of four sound-proof generators, which have a capacity of 2000 mega watts,” a PCA official said.

Mohali district police have also made elaborate security arrangements to ensure smooth conduct of matches at PCA.

“We would provide a three-tier security cover at PCA during the matches. Around 1,500 cops and a QRT (quick reaction team) will be deployed to avoid any untoward incident,” Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, district police chief, told IANS.

“We have also held meetings with the ICC officials and they were satisfied with our security arrangements.”

imran and avantika 200x300 Imran chose work over wife on Valentines Day Bollywood actor Imran Khan is quite a romantic at heart but, surprisingly, he chose to work on his first Valentine’s Day after marriage, rather than pamper his wife Avantika Malik. And guess where was he? In the ladies’ compartment of Mumbai’s local train!

The young heartthrob was busy shooting for a Coke commercial at the Goregaon station here Monday. He was supposed to enter the ladies’ compartment — much to the delight of all the travellers, says a source.

Many girls jumped at the opportunity and rushed to take his autograph and clicked pictures with Imran, who happily obliged.

“It was a lot of fun shooting the ad. It’s the first time that I travelled by train, and certainly the first time I travelled in a ladies’ compartment,” said Imran.

Mumbai girls got lucky as Imran shot from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the station and hopped onto almost every train.

The commercial shows Imran rushing to catch the train. But he realises later that he has entered the ladies’ compartment.

Kamat insists CBI was asked to handle Goa drug probe

Posted: 16 Feb 2011 01:36 AM PST

Digambar Kamat 250x300 Kamat insists CBI was asked to handle Goa drug probe Chief Minister Digambar Kamat Wednesday insisted he had asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over the police-politician-drug mafia nexus probe, two days after the agency said it had received no such communication from the Goa government.

Kamat insisted that the chief secretary had written to the union ministry for personnel asking the CBI to take over the probe into the drug nexus, allegedly involving Home Minister Ravi Naik’s son along with several top police officials.

“We have written to the union ministry for personnel and not to the CBI directly. Maybe they (CBI officials) have not been told yet. We cannot write to the CBI directly,” Kamat told reporters here.

He said the home minister had even tabled a letter written by the Goa government to the union ministry during the last session of the Goa assembly, which concluded earlier this month.

CBI functions under the aegis of the union personnel ministry.

The drug nexus probe involving two Israeli drug dealers, which has seen the suspension, arrest and subsequent release of all police officials and drug dealers on bail, has caught the imagination of the state, especially with the opposition and the Israeli media claiming that Naik’s son, Roy, was linked to the nexus.

The opposition has also staged walkouts from the assembly several times over the issue during the last one year, especially after the state government refused to hand over the case to the CBI.

Though Kamat now claims the state government had requested the CBI to take over the case, CBI officials, while responding to a petition filed in the Bombay High Court by a student union leader on the drug probe, could have just called his bluff.

“The state government had not issued any authorization to the CBI to take over investigation of the case as required under the provisions of the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act 1946,” S.S. Gavali, the CBI superintendent of police in Goa, told the high court via an affidavit Monday.

He said the case should not be handed over to the CBI because “none of the accused involved in the case are central government employees and therefore the case did not fall within the ambit of CBI jurisdiction”.

CBI also told the court that the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) was more suitable to handle the investigations.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has said the CBI affidavit proves the Congress-led alliance government had misled the assembly.

“Who is lying? The home minister or the CBI? On one hand, the home minister says he has handed over the case to the CBI, but the CBI denies it. The home minister has misled the Goa assembly and taken it for a ride. He has made a false statement before the house. He should resign from his post as home minister,” party spokesman Rajendra Arlekar said.

Hope to break parliament deadlock: Manmohan

manmohan singh11 250x300 Hope to break parliament deadlock: Manmohan Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Wednesday he hopes to break the deadlock in parliament over the opposition demand for a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) probe into the 2G spectrum scandal.

Asked whether he hoped parliament would function normally in the upcoming budget session as the opposition was adamant on a JPC, Manmohan Singh said: “We are making all efforts to deal with the issues. We hope for a solution.”

The prime minister was interacting with editors of television channels at his residence here.

The budget session starts Feb 21.

The winter session of parliament was virtually washed away by opposition protests demanding a JPC over 2G spectrum scandal related to irregularities in the allocation of second generation spectrum to telecom companies.

2G spectrum issue didn’t come to cabinet: PM

Posted: 16 Feb 2011 01:15 AM PST

Manmohan Singh2 263x300 2G spectrum issue didnt come to cabinet: PMPrime Minister Manmohan Singh clarified Wednesday that former communication minister A. Raja decided on the allocation of 2G spectrum licences in 2008 and the issue was “never brought to me or the cabinet”.

“In allocation of 2G spectrum, the issue of licences was never brought to me or the cabinet. That was the decision of the (then communication) minister,” he said, adding that Raja had assured him of “complete transparency” on the issue.

The prime minister was responding to a question at a press conference here with TV editors on the first-come-first-served policy of granting 2G spectrum licences that Raja had adopted.

“I wrote a letter to Raja on Nov 2, 2007. I listed a number of issues that you must look into and (ensure) they are dealt (with) in (an) equitable, fair and transparent manner. One of the issues that I asked him to look into was the possibility from the legal and technical angle of having an auction of spectrum,” Manmohan Singh said.

He said Raja wrote back saying he had been absolutely “transparent in dealings”.

“I will be so in the future and you have my assurance that I have done nothing and I will do nothing that will be consistent to the promise that I have made to you,” Manmohan Singh said, citing Raja’s letter.

The prime minister admitted he had received complaints against Raja but “I was not in a position to make up my mind if anything was seriously wrong”.

“Complaints were coming in, complaints were coming from all sides. Some were from those who had not benefited, some were from those who had benefited partly,” he said.

“I don’t know what was the motivation of the people who got the spectrum. I thought as it was the prevailing practice and Raja was continuing with that policy,” Manmohan Singh added.

Raja had taken the line that he was only continuing the policy adopted in 2003 by the previous Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance government, which had been endorsed by the Department of Telecom and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India.

Bryan Adams will come back to Delhi: Suniel Shetty

Posted: 15 Feb 2011 10:03 PM PST

Bryan Adams will come back to Delhi: Suniel Shetty Bryan Adams will “definitely” come back to Delhi, according to Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty whose wife supports NGO Save the Children for which funds are being raised with the singer’s concerts in India.

“He’s (Bryan’s) definitely coming back to Delhi. We won’t disappoint his fans,” Shetty said.

“I didn’t know Bryan before he came to India for the current concerts. He’s a really chilled-out guy. Truly 18 forever at heart. No one was shedding tears over the cancelled concert,” he added.

Bryan Adams’s concert in Delhi Tuesday was cancelled as a No Objection Certificate (NOC) was not given to it by the police due to security reasons. Bryan Adams has teamed up with Netsurf Entertainment to raise funds for Save the Children India.

But Shetty seemed unperturbed.

“We’re in the process of setting a new date for the Delhi concert. Bryan performs in Hyderabad. Then he heads for Bangladesh and Nepal. We’ll set a new date for Delhi concert as soon as he finishes his other commitments,” he said.

Looking at the positive side of the fiasco, Shetty said: “Good that the rains happened before the Delhi concert.”

“Imagine if it had happened during the concert. All of Bryan’s musical equipment would’ve been destroyed. It isn’t such a loss, really. We will set a date for the Delhi concert at the earliest,” he said.

Inflation should be down to seven percent: PM

Posted: 15 Feb 2011 09:59 PM PST

Inflation should be down to seven percent: PM Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Wednesday conceded that inflation has been a problem for India in recent weeks, but should come down to around seven percent by year-end.

“Inflation and food inflation in particular has been a problem,” Manmohan Singh said at an interaction with editors of the electronic media.

But by year-end, “inflation rate should come down to no more than seven percent,” he said.

He said the government wanted to ensure that the growth process is “not disturbed”. It is trying to deal with inflation at a time “when we don’t have all the instruments at our command”.

“We have to deal with inflation despite an adverse international environment,” he said.
